Applications for elections can be submitted

In addition to the election applications already available, voters can submit their applications for the absentee voting, mobile ballot box applications and registration in the electoral roll of foreign representations for the June 9, 2024, elections from April 4. Applications can be submitted online or in person or by proxy at any local election office.

Budapest, April 4, 2024 – From April 4, 2024, applications for absentee voting and for a mobile ballot box may be submitted for the elections to the European Parliament, local government, and minority self-government. Voters may also apply for inclusion in the electoral roll of foreign representations, which covers only the election of representatives of the European Parliament, from April 4.

  • Voters have until 4 p.m. on Friday May 31, 2024, to register, and until 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2024, to withdraw their applications. Please note that the rules on absentee voting differ for each type of election. While in the general elections for local government representatives and mayors and for minority representatives, voters can apply for absentee voting only in the municipality of their residence, in the elections for members of the European Parliament they can apply for absentee voting in any municipality.
  • If you are unable to vote because of your health, disability, or detention, you can request a mobile ballot box. You can apply for a mobile ballot box until 12 noon on polling day, Sunday, June 9, 2024.
  • The deadline for submitting an application to be entered on the electoral roll of foreign representations is 4 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024, for EP elections only, and the deadline for requesting to be removed from the electoral roll of foreign representations is 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

In addition to the above, voters will still be able to submit the election applications that are already available:

  • Hungarian citizens who do not have an address in Hungary or in any other Member State of the European Union may apply to be entered into the electoral roll or to have their data amended by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the latest, with effect from the 2024 general elections, and may vote by post after successful registration.
  • Citizens of other European Union Member States residing in Hungary have until 4 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024, to submit their applications for registration if they wish to vote for Hungarian MEPs.
  • Voters who declare themselves to belong to one of the 13 nationalities in Hungary can still apply to be entered in the electoral roll of minorities. The deadline for submitting applications for entry in the electoral roll is 4 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024. The deadline for submitting applications for removal from the electoral roll is also 4 p.m.
  • Voters with disabilities have until 4 pm on Friday, May 31, 2024, to request a Braille ballot paper, and until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, to request an accessible polling station.

Applications may be submitted electronically, by online identification at www.valasztas.hu, or in person or by proxy at any local election office. Applications for a mobile ballot box and registration applications for those without a Hungarian address can be submitted electronically, without online identification, and by post to any local election office.

From December 1, 2023, the National Electoral Office decides on applications for the electoral roll in an automatic decision-making procedure, so in most cases the decision will be taken within a few minutes.
