New forms and deadlines for the electoral procedure now available

As of today, nominating organisations can apply for registration for the 2024 general elections at the competent electoral commissions.

Budapest, March 2024 - President of the Republic Tamás Sulyok has set the date for the general election of members of the European Parliament and local government representatives and mayors for 9 June, 2024.

As of today, nominating organisations can apply for registration for the June general elections at the regional and metropolitan election commissions and the National Election Commission.

The forms used in the electoral procedure are available at www.valasztas.hu/europai-parlamenti-valasztasok1.

A special feature of this year's elections is that MEPs, local councillors and mayors, as well as representatives of  minority self-governments, will be elected on the same day, 9 June, in a joint procedure. The term of office of the municipal representatives and mayors elected five years ago and still in office will not end with this election, it will last until 1 October 2024.

The main deadlines for the elections are:

- When the elections are called, nominating organisations may apply to the regional and metropolitan electoral commissions and the National Electoral Commission for registration for all elections.

- From 4 April, 2024 voters will be able to submit election-related applications, such as applications for absentee voting, applications for a mobile ballot box and, in the case of EP elections, applications for voting at foreign representations.

- The campaign for the EP, municipal and national minority elections will start on 20 April, 2024. From that date, nominating organisations and voters wishing to become candidates can collect the necessary recommendations to stand as a candidate.

- EU citizens have until 4 p.m. on 24 May, 2024 to apply to be entered on the electoral roll if they wish to vote for Hungarian MEPs.

- Voters who declare themselves as belonging to one of the 13 nationalities in Hungary may apply to be entered in the minority register by 4 p.m. on 31 May, 2024 in order to vote in the election of minority self-government representatives.

- Hungarian citizens who do not have a residence in Hungary or in any other Member State of the European Union may apply to be registered by 4 p.m. on 15 May, 2024 at the latest, and after successful registration they may vote by post.

All election-related applications can be submitted online at https://www.valasztas.hu/ugyintezes in person or by proxy at any local election office.

Some 90,000 commission members, 20,000 election office staff and around 800 election office staff at the foreign representations are involved in the elections.

In addition to the 21 Hungarian MEPs, we will elect the Mayor of Budapest, the 3 177 mayors, some 16 500 representatives of municipalities, 432 county councils and 33 capital city councils. Approximately 33 800 000 ballot papers are expected to be produced for the elections, including one EP ballot paper, 7 800 municipal ballot papers and 2 200 nationality ballot papers.

With the start of the campaign, on 20 April. 2024 the collection of signatures for the referendum initiative initiated by László György Lukács on the Chamber of Commerce contribution will be interrupted. According to the Act on The initiative for a referendum, the European citizens' initiative and the referendum procedure, the collection of signatures must be suspended between the 50th day before the day of the general election of Members of Parliament, Members of the European Parliament, local government representatives and mayors, and representatives of  minority self-governments and the 30th day after the vote.
