Press release

The statement that „several thousands [of people]” have established an address near the border with Ukraine does not agree with the facts. In the settlements in question, 60 people in total have established a domicile since 1 January 2018, whereas 30 people have established a temporary residence (young people under the age of 18 included).

On the basis of data received from the Ministry of Interior, the National Election Office examined the evolution of the population in the settlements Botpalád, Csaholc, Fülesd, Kispalád, Milota and Zsarolyán – each belonging to the parliamentary single-member constituency No. 4 of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county.

As it can be seen in the table below, the total population of the 7 settlements mentioned was 5 882 people on 1 January 2018. Beginning with 1 January 2018, only 60 people have established a domicile and 30 people have established a temporary residence in these settlements.

If we look exclusively at the number of citizens entitled to vote: on the day on which the date of the parliamentary election was set, the number of people on the electoral list was 4 502, on polling day their number was 3 962, and the number of those turning out to vote was 2 494 (which represents 62,9 percent – below the national average.)

To sum up, it can be said that whether we take data from the civil registry or the central electoral register keeping record of the voters, the statement that „several thousands [of people]” have established an address in the settlements mentioned does not agree with the facts.

In polling districts in Hungary, only Hungarian voters having a Hungarian address can vote. Hungarian voters who do not have a Hungarian address can vote exclusively by post after registration.
