Where and how can I vote?
I have a Hungarian domicile
Parliamentary elections
- Voting at another polling district: in parliamentary elections, votes can be cast at any designated polling district, in any municipality in the country by submitting an application for absentee voting online, in writing, in person or by authorized representative at any local election office.
Voting at a foreign representation: requests for registration in the foreign representation electoral register may be submitted by voters recorded in the polling district electoral register who stay abroad on voting day. Those registered in the foreign representation electoral register may cast their votes at one of the designated Embassies, Consulates General, Consulates, Consular Offices of Hungary.
Parliamentary by-elections
Voting at another polling district: within the parliamentary single-member constituency concerned in the by-election, votes can be cast at any designated polling district of any freely chosen municipality by submitting an application for absentee voting online, in writing, in person or by an authorized representative at any local election office.
Requests regarding the polling district electoral register may be submitted if the election day is set, between the 66th and the 9th day prior to the election day.
Local and national minority self-government elections
- Voting at your registered temporary place of residence: you can vote in municipal elections at your temporary place of residence if you have been registered there for at least 30 days prior to the election day and your registration is still valid on the day of the election. You can submit your application online and in person on paper, or through an authorized representative at any local election office.
You can do all this after the date of the election has been announced, between the 66th and 9th day prior to the election day.
If you belong to recognized national minority in Hungary (Bulgarian, Greek, Croatian, Polish, German, Armenian, Roma, Rusyn, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian), you must register in order to be included in the central register as a national minority voter, and you can request to be included in the national minority register for municipal elections or for municipal and parliamentary elections.
There is no option to vote at foreign representations in local municipal elections for representatives and mayors, or in national minority self-government elections.
European Parliamentery elections
- Voting in another polling station: in the European Parliamentary elections, you can cast your vote in any designated polling station in any municipality of your choice by submitting a request online or in person in writing or through an authorized representative at any local election office for absentee voting.
- Voting at a foreign representation: you can request to be included in the designated foreign representation register if you wish to cast your vote at one of the Hungarian representations abroad.
- Voting for candidates in your country of residence: if you do not wish to vote for Hungarian party lists but for candidates in your country of residence, you may request to be included in the register of that EU Member State in accordance with the laws of the host country. In this case, the National Election Office will remove you from the Hungarian register at the request of the electoral authority of the other EU country, thereby preventing you from voting twice.
The above-mentioned actions my be taken after setting a date for the election, between the 66th and 9th days before election day.
Referenda
- Voting in another polling station: in national referendums, you can cast your vote in any designated polling station in any municipality of your choice by submitting a request online or in person in writing, or through an authorized representative at any local election office for absentee voting.
- Voting at a foreign representation: you can request to be entered in the register of foreign representations if you wish to cast your vote at one of the designated Hungarian foreign representations abroad.
The above-mentioned actions my be taken between the 66th and 9th days before the election, after the referendum has been announced.
I do not have a Hungarian domicile
Hungarian citizens living abroad may - after registration - cast their votes in parliamentary elections, in national referenda and - if they do not have an address in another Member State of the European Union - in the election of the Members of the European Parliament, as described in the postal voting package sent to you.
